As a Nepali shoes company, GoldStar is a successful market leader due to its durability, quality, and affordability. That’s the reason a company is able to establish a brand name in the footwear industry. In this article, we tried to deep dig inside the GoldStar shoes history and background of the company.
History & Revolution of the Company
A footwear company was first introduced in the mid-1970s. At that time it was the main business and production of Universal groups. A brand GoldStar was started by Noor Pratap Rana and later continued to run the company by his family member.
Noor always had a clear vision of doing something on his own. He started and ended business relating tender of trees and transportation at his younger days. Established a business to make metal strings for which he imported Mica. Even more, he tried his hand on little business but nothing wonder happened until he manufactured the first pair of slippers called Hattichaap chappal in Hetauda along with his partners.
The Civil War Phase
If wearing an affordable pair of shoes landed you in prison then nobody would take the risk of wearing it. Goldstar faced a huge problem because their shoes were branded and affordable as the shoes worn by Maoists Guerilla during the period of civil war.“They were trying to stop the lifeline, like food, but at the same time they were stopping the shoes as well,” says Amir Rana, managing director of Goldstar’s parent company Universal Group. “The security forces profiled them. If a guy was wearing Goldstar shoes and had a backpack, he was Maoist,” Rana adds.
Due to the fear of landing in prison people stopped wearing Goldstar shoes. Goldstar first faced a major decline in sales of shoes during this period. The company didn’t perform well as expected but Noor didn’t lose faith in him. This eventually led the company to rise to its height as now it stands as the largest retailer of footwear in Nepal. Noor died at the age of 78 due to chest pain leaving his empire solely to his son Amir Pratap Thapa.
Reinventing the brand
Goldstar shoes were going strong. People loved the durable shoes. Goldstar produced because of its quality and affordability. But as people say there is always scope for improvement. Goldstar now decided to reinvent the brand from durable to fashionable shoe brand with durability.
Goldstar hired experts in order to make its shoes stylish and fashionable in order to attract younger age groups consumer.
