Instagram was launched on October 6, 2010 in IOS app through app store. It was released half year later in android operating system.

It took Instagram just 551 days to gain up to 30 million users. It must have done whole lot of correct things to reach that level of superiority in such a short period of time. Let’s have a look how Instagram became one of the top social media app in short time period.

About the Company

Instagram was developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger when they chose to focus their multi-featured HTML5 check-in project, Burbn, on mobile photography.

The idea of Instagram came from instant camera and telegram. The first ever photo posted on Instagram was of a dog in Mexico with Kevin’s girlfriend foot.  The photo was enhanced using the instagram filter.

At first instagram was released on IOS and after half year on Android. Within one day of release in Android, instagram was downloaded more than one million times.

In 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock, with the plan to keep company independently managed. Not bad for a company which was established only 1.5 years ago with 13 employees.

Key factors of Success

Instagram was at the right place at the right time. When the traffic on social media platform was increasing, there was an application just launched for uploading photo.

Instagram came about just as social networker’s use of visual communication began to skyrocket. Since the introduction of instagram other social media platform such as Facebook, Twitter also upgraded their visual interface integration in 2011.

Instagram also helped people to perfect their photo with simple clicks on the app. When you click photo on instagram there are certain filters available so that you don’t have to worry about the perfect saturation of the image.

Instagram created such an application which was easy to use and view your photo and videos. For an amateur photographer, there is no need to worry about the right amount of white balance or saturation level. Filter helped amateur photographer looked like pro.

Instagram genius is in its layout. The interface is simple; allows users to see pictures from people they follow in a clean, chronological order.

Unlike many other social photo displays, Instagram displays photos one at a time. Instagram also allows people to message, like and comment on the photo.

Instagram did nothing new; it did not spend in investing anything new. Rather it perfected the already present format. But instagram did not copy from other similar platform such as Flicker and Hipstamatic.

Instagram also entered into the territory where no other social network site had perfected their game. Instagram entered mobile photography and social photography and perfected it.

Instagram allowed people to post their social networks, and they also created their own social network. Now with Instagram people can follow pictures from their friends from Facebook or other social network. Easy interface of instagram helped it in its growth.

So Instagram is the classic example of making right decision at the right time and always looking to improve. The success achieved by Instagram in short period of time is attributed to decision it has made.
